Richard Howard’s exuberant and definitive rendition of Stendhal’s stirring tale has brought about the rediscovery of this classic by modern readers. The majority of it is taken up with the bureaucratic and romantic intrigues of a court in the small Italian state of Parma, and to the modern Western reader most of this stuff is crushingly dull.
Stendhal, a veteran of several Napoleonic cartuj he was one of the survivors of the retreat from Moscow indescribes this famous battle as a chaotic affair: Count Mosca stays in Parma, and when the Prince does die it is strongly implied that he was poisoned by Ferrante he puts down a revolt by some local revolutionaries and installs the son of the Prince on the throne.

Towards the end of the novel, his efforts, such as they are, lead people to say that he was one of Napoleon’s bravest captains or colonels.

Great writing usually just doesn’t emerge in such a brief span and cartja is not conducive to quality, as most of the hacks on bestseller lists in America conclusively prove.

There was a problem filtering reviews right now. A year later she bears Fabrice’s child. If you’re a Stendahl fan you’ll probably want to read this at some point, and maybe it’s better than I know and I’m just not the best reader for this one.
Gina becomes the Grand Mistress to the old Princess who has been enchanted with Gina since she made her socially relevant despite the indifference of her late husband. But then light slowly came to him. He really made a number of knuckleheaded moves with his career and women so much so that, at times, he seems to fall far too short of the heroic stature that I’m sure Stendahl intended for him.

Count Mosca’s plan has Fabrice go to seminary school in Napleswith the idea that when he graduates he will come to Parma and become a senior figure in the religious hierarchy, and eventually the Archbishopas the current office holder is old.
And yet–here is the marvelous part–“The Charterhouse of Parma,” for all its realism, is still an incredibly romantic novel, containing a battle, a duel, a knife fight, various disguises for the hero and others, a poetry-writing revolutionary highwayman, and the most romantic setting for a love-affair possible–a passionate encounter between an unjustly imprisoned young nobleman and the beautiful daughter of the prison warden, soon to be married to a rich man she despises!
