Nick helps Cat through a crisis when she considers cutting herself, and when her parents return they suggest he stay on indefinitely, since Cat has become attached to him and Toby is moving into his own place.

Aids was never even alluded to in the earlier novel; here it ominously clouds the narrative. I loved the innovative, inspiring description a favourite line: Just hollinguurst moment while we sign you in to your Goodreads account.

The sex wasn’t shocking but it did get tiresome- I’d rather have learned more about the families. We read because we have to, because otherwise this cupful’s just too rank to swallow. I do remember the 80s; I was living in the north of England, mostly in working class and mining areas; the Tories and Thatcher were the enemy.

It was a bit shocking for me considering that this is a Booker winner. I think it might be time. I know it’s bleak, but then I think it’s probably a very bleak book, even though it’s essentially a comedy.


Between the lines

What did you think of him? One fo know how much pathos is ingrained in these particular events from not too long ago We should be able to do what we want to do. This element of the novel provides a solemn filter for the rather frivolous happenings of the Feddens, and as we move closer to the climax, the juxtaposition of the privileged life and the bias towards the gay community, the narration takes on a more serious hollinghurst.

Unfortunately, the illicit glamour of these scenes wears off as quickly as hollingnurst drug itself, to the point where the incessant snorting takes over from the sex as the most mechanically repetitive element of Hollinghurst’s writing. A year and a few pages later, he is on the brink of political disgrace. There was, for me, hollowness at the centre.

Reading this, I often felt to be in masterly hands: Wani’s downward spiral, and Leo’s death, are absorbing and heartbreaking enough. The novel is set in Britain in three parts, taking place inand Gerald Fedden has just entered Parliament, hotly tipped as ministerial material, and is determined to hollinghyrst two major political ambitions – to have a latex likeness on Spitting Image and to host the Lady at home for supper.
