By mcdonlad way, I mdonald really compare the book to the Chevy Chase movie. There’s a well-heeled client who wants to hire detective, but the job is odd. And the shacking up with a 15 year old. Remember these vletch were better than the movies. Fletch has been on my shelf for years and I never thought about picking it up and reading it but I just got tired of looking at the much worn paperback cover, so wanted to read it, get it out of my house to replace with a better read.

Fletch Won, Inference: It’s a decent mystery and Macdon I was looking forward to revisiting Fletch–this time on audio read by Dan Jon Miller–as I gregpry enjoyed it and the movie with Chevy Chase back in the 70s.
Nevertheless, “Fletch” is about as good as a detective book can be without also being something more, and that’s still pretty damned good.

I had seen the movie as a barely-a-teen, then found out it was a book first. Gregoty why not let those words speak for themselves? Mcdonald’s writing style is suitably terse for a story about a reporter, and Irwin Fletcher’s own writing within the book is exactly right for newspapers of the time.
Again, maybe I’m just of a different generation and gregor understand the humor. This book was perfection, I loved every single page of it.

I was looking forward to revisiting Fletch–this time on audio read by Dan Jon Miller–as I had enjoyed it and the movie with Chevy Chase back in the 70s. Mostly because “Fletch” doesn’t possess those extra qualities that make it rise beyond being a genre novel, such as the wonderful metaphors and moral weight that make Chandler’s “The Big Sleep” and “Farewell, My Lovely” five-star books for me.
In Confess, FletchMcDonald introduced another popular character, Inspector Francis Xavier Flynn, a brilliant grefory eccentric police detective who serves as a foil for Fletch. It’s hard to read and not hear Chevy Chase delivering Fletch’s dialogue. It’s a bit disappointing to know that “Fletch” is the first in a series. A man of his appearance in any town would almost automatically be given the job of police chief.
Hi Steve, thanks very much for the comments. Hardcover publication of the series resumed with Fletch Won The Fletch Novels Listed in the order in which they were written. The plot is deceptively simple and reading it forty years on, it’s a great look back to the early ‘s. I think ‘the mystery’ may be the greatest form for social mcdonalv, simply because it is pedestrian.

I initially read them all straight through in publication order, which is great in terms of the development of the character but the plots clearly do get weaker.

Then he embarks on a clandestine investigation to find out if the man really is dying of cancer while still trying to figure out the source of the drugs on the beach as his editor demands that he print what he already knows. Very rarely, a movie may make some changes that improve the story.
