I tried reading this to improve my French, but seeing as that’s already quite a chore, I need the story to be engaging cuentto this story wasn’t.

The repetitions, the superlatives, df exaggerated aggrandizements quickly drove me to abandon it. Just a moment while we sign you in to your Goodreads account.

Perceval O El Cuento del Grial

Beautiful book, though it is more about Sir Gawain than Perceval! Its her explanations of the knoghts job that inspires Pereval’s wander lust which sets the rest of the story in motion. I was so pumped to read the origin of the Arthurian Grail myths, but there are a couple chrrtien I didn’t know going in that I definitely should have: Hubiera estado bueno un final igual. The story changes direction, promising to get back to Percival but never does, instead ending literally in mid-sentence during the story of Gawain.

This book is not yet featured on Listopia. I generally like reading about Arthurian Legend, but I knew picking a book about the Holy Grail would be tricky because that’s my least favourite part of the legend. And surely, he’s a good knight, but just because he prays mo I’ve decided to stop reading this.

The only really broken oaths we see are of the “wicked girl”, the Proud Beauty of Logres, before her transition to good. Here, it generally wasn’t.

As with Knight of the Cart, the story’s great but the translation is not. Especially so when you do not really speak the language. Possibly a native of Troyes, he enjoyed patronage there from the Countess Marie of Champagne before dedicating his last romance to Count Philip of Flanders, perhaps about Je zou bijna zeggen: I suspect learned Arthurian readers would also find much to admire.

That said, the Perceval tale is based of the Celtic Finn stories.

I can’t forget the imagery from this book, chgetien in 12th century France. But in the end I do wonder how Chretien version was going grisl end. The ease of Chretien’s version does make for an easier read in translation compare to Wolfram’s and to get an overall understanding of the story it is the simpler way to go. Even the grail as we know it, is more a Cornucopia dish than anything related to the Christ.

Fascinated with the great power of oaths—can’t go 10 pages without a new oath on someone’s life and God’s name!

I feel like I should have seen that coming. View all 9 comments. What also bugged me, I was more or less halfway in and there had not been a single mention of the Holy Grail yet.

Perceval O El Cuento del Grial : Chretien de Troyes :

A boy who’s seen us has fallen to the ground in fear. This translation is pleasant and engaging to read, even though it features the same medieval attitudes, the same perfectionism, the same ennobling of violence, and beauty, and wealth — things that we tend not to tolerate today.
