I learned through reading several other books on the Battle of the Atlantic that Karl Doenitz was the master naval strategist responsible for creating and implementing the devastatingly effective “Wolf Pack” method of attacking Allied convoys. As a submariner and engineer myself, I particularly appreciated Doenitz’ technical style of writing, which included numbers and analysis given by official records of the war – therefore a lot of his memoir isn’t just based on recollection but supported by This is a pretty dry read; however, it is very well written and very interesting, given the fact that it was written by the man who orchestrated Germany’s U-Boat operations during WWII, and was also Hitler’s successor following Hitler’s death.
