Derkhollm had five griffin sons and daughters, apart from his two human children. I had great sympathy for the “Dark Lord” who was just an actor. I’m enough of a longtime fantasy reader to know that if you don’t see a body, possibly with the head ten feet away, he ain’t dead.
Then imagine that an enterprising person from an “otherworld” much like ours stumbled through a portal and discovered this real “fantasy” world. Every year dedkholm wizard is chosen to be the Dark Lord for a series of tourist parties from Earth arranged by the villainous bean counter Mr Chesney, a position of great importance as you’re responsible for keeping the entire planet organised to service the tourists or face death by Chesney’s pocket loord.

I really liked the main characters and the story. I still had some problems with this book: What they expect are all the trappings of a grand fantasy adventure, including the Evil Enchantress, Lorx Guides, the Dark Lord, Winged Minions, and Everyone – wizards, soldiers, farmers, elves, dragons, kings and queens alike – is fed up with Mr Chesney’s Pilgrim Parties: Mythopoeic Fantasy Award Children’s Literature, I loved watching Jones take cherished cliches and turn them on their heads.
The time has come to end the staged madness. I didn’t like it as much as Howl’s Moving Castlebut there’s not much to top Howl, so that’s not bad.

And Pilgrim Parties, organised by a man from another world — Mr Chesney who holds a demon captive in his pocket to make the magic world do his bidding.
Tours go through and the people living there have to put on a world wide show. I didn’t recapture the magic as an adult.
The overall concept of this novel is one which hinges around the idea that people from our world or at least a world very similar travel across worlds into a fantasy land populated by peaceful groups of elves, wizards, dragons and so forth. Dark Lord of Derkholm is a very, very funny book–providing you’re familiar with the genre and tropes it’s satirizing. What an excellent book! So real that cities were sacked down, people were killed, fields were destroyed. It could have gone the straight up parody route, or it could have taken this topic seriously ala Hunger Games, maybe?

Re-read August 5, The grittiness, too, is staggeringly well-done – I really get the exhaustion of the characters during the long marches. Chesney operates Pilgrim Parties, a tour group that takes paying participants into an outer realm where the inhabitants play frightening and foreboding roles. Meanwhile the Tour organizer is stealing lprd essence of this world for ‘otherworld’.
