Following Colonel Wilder’s death and Gaunt’s return to command, the regiment resumes the name the Tanith First-and-Only. The second novel was Horus Rising by Dan Abnett — what a brilliant piece of science fiction mangasm prose that was. The novel re-introduces Agun Soric, who was absent from the previous books in the guosts arc.

The capital city of Tanith — surrounded by a giant wall, presumably to keep the nalwood trees from moving into the city — was Tanith Magna.

Doing so will break the morale of the Chaos worshippers and enable the Imperial forces to recapture Ouranberg with greater ease. Weapons blazing, Gaunt’s Ghosts went over the top and blasted their way towards glory, death or whatever else awaited them in the smoke. No real plot, just piggybacking on a group of soldiers. The Warhammer 40, setting’s religion – which sees the immortal Emperor venerated as a god and his greatest generals and tacticians as saints – gant pretty ludicrous, but here Abnett makes it work. This marks the first demonstration of the hatred that Colonel Draker Flense, the commander of the Jantine Patricians who suggested that Dravere give the assault order, has for Colonel-Commissar Gaunt.

The main Tanith curse-word ghosrs fethwhich is used in the same context as “fuck”, but it is also the name of an ancient Tanith tree-god.

Gaunt and his men are just a tiny outfit in the immense Imperial human army that is fighting an endless war all across the galaxy against the mutated forces of Chaos.

Good characters, messed up plots, and Gaunt is a badass. This goes on for a third of the book without Abnett even making the slightest effort at developing even one character among the entire ensemble, thereby creating a huge waste of time.

The book’s weaknesses are more than made up for by the excellent twist that the new internal threat to the unit presents and also some crowd-pleasing moments in the book’s finale such as one where a character is invited to look under a table. Dalin does not recognise him, only asking if Kolea had known his parents in Vervunhive, to which Kolea replies that they had “died in the war”.

Innokenti deploys annett specialist assassins to the Civitas Beati under the cover of the invasion. Up until Guns of Tanith the Ghosts are mainly pitted against heretical rebels armies, but on Phantine and in most of the campaigns following it they face the well-trained and elite Blood Pact.
