The reference to Stallone, under Mao’s regime, was weird too. Nevertheless, I would be lying, if I didn’t say I was hoping for the narrator to “get the girl” in the end. We get some hints that nebbish boy feels he had somehow been part of a betrayal, but not enough. Sometimes a story has such an unsatisfying ending that I would rather have not read it at costureta. The stuff about villagers’ clothes suddenly being made in the balzc century French style was unbelievable I can’t remember anything so detailed in the “Count of Monte Cristo”.
Luo decides that the seamstress is too uncultured and uneducated for him and he is determined to educate her and make her more sophisticated so that they can be together. Books by Dai Sijie.
