The first story is about a boy who is eager to impress his father and live up to his expectations of being an all-state wrestler. I really enjoyed Chris Crutcher’s short stories and was glad to know that they came from the characters and situations that he wrote in some of his previous novels. The boy challenges his father to a father-son wrestling match, which of course his father agrees to because he does not want to appear to be a coward or submissive to his son, whom he views as weaker than him. The short story format keeps the action focused and definitely packs a punch. A couple stories fall a little flat for me, but they are full of heart and unflinching in their reflections of real social stigmas. This book was very engaging and interesting to me.

I also felt like the topics that were discussed were very pertinent, because they were similar to things that I have dealt with in my life.
