Duclos’s letter comes to Maurizio, who then cancels his appointment with Adriana. Michonnet and Maurizio realize that she has been poisoned by the Princess.
She kisses the flowers, ‘Poveri fiori’, and throws them in the fire. A ballet is performed: Adriana uses the final lines of the text to make a headstrong attack on the Princess, who determines to have her revenge. She looks in the box and takes out the faded violets that she had once given Maurizio in the theatre. After Cilea created his own Adrianahowever, none of those by others were performed anymore and they remain largely unknown today.
